Magic Feather Prescribed Burn to resume Friday10/20

RED FEATHER LAKES, Colo. (Oct. 18, 2023) – Firefighters on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District continue to monitor local conditions to resume operations on the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn near Red Feather Lakes as soon as Oct. 20, 2023.

The burn is located east and southeast of Red Feather Lakes. Expect to see increased activity while firefighters are prepping and burning within the project area. A forest closure remains in place south of County Road 74e (Red Feather Lakes Road), including Lady Moon and Elkhorn Creek Trailheads. The Mount Margaret Trailhead remains open.

Earlier this month fire personnel successfully treated 470 acres. Resources plan to light interior ignitions on Unit 6. Appropriate, localized conditions must be met before ignitions can take place. Weather is monitored throughout the burn and burning is halted if conditions fall outside of the required conditions.

People in the surrounding area should expect to see smoke when operations are taking place. Smoke may also impact those using the Dowdy Lake Campgrounds and Day-Use Area. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information about the potential health impacts of smoke, visit Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment

This prescribed burn is part of the overall strategy on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests to address the Wildfire Crisis. Even with the most thorough planning and preparation, the use of prescribed fire carries an innate level of risk that cannot be eliminated entirely. However, prescribed fire is one of the most efficient ways of reducing wildfire risk. Regularly conducting prescribed fires, which mimic nature, reduces the buildup of flammable vegetation and overgrowth.

7-20 - Magic Feather Prescribed Burn could resume next week

Firefighters on the Roosevelt National Forest have been closely monitoring local conditions at the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn, located south and southeast of Red Feather Lakes. Until recently, conditions at this site have been too wet to carry fire and achieve the desired fuel reduction effects.

Burning of the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn has been taking place over recent years as conditions have allowed. In May 2023, 200 acres were successfully burned, all north of County Road 74E (Red Feather Lakes Road).

Appropriate, localized conditions must be met before ignition of prescribed burns can take place. Fire managers have been carefully monitoring these conditions, including favorable weather forecast (temperature, wind, precipitation, relative humidity), fuel moisture, smoke dispersal and staffing. Weather is monitored throughout the burn and burning is halted if conditions fall outside of the required conditions.

People in the area should expect to see smoke when operations are taking place, including around Dowdy Lake and West Lake campgrounds and day-use areas. The trail system in the Mount Margaret, Molly Lake, Elkhorn and Lady Moon area is open until burning resumes but will be closed during burning operations.

This prescribed burn is part of the overall strategy on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests to address the Wildfire Crisis. Prescribed fire is one of the most efficient ways of reducing wildfire risk. Regularly conducting prescribed fires, which mimic nature, reduces the buildup of flammable vegetation and overgrowth.

4/20 - FORT COLLINS, Colo. (April 20, 2023) – Firefighters on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest are closely monitoring local conditions to begin prescribed fire operations on the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn near Red Feather Lakes as soon as April 28, 2023.

Burning last occurred on this project in December 2021. Timing of this prescribed burn is meant to take advantage of conditions that allow fire to carry throughout the burn to reduce hazardous fuels. Burning could happen throughout the coming months if conditions allow.

This burn is located east and southeast of Red Feather Lakes. Burning operations could include five units totaling approximately 1,255 acres, located north of County Road 74E (Red Feather Lakes Road). Work has already taken place in the area to prepare for ignitions, including tree cutting around the perimeter and within the interior of the project.

People in the area should expect to see smoke when operations are taking place. The Mount Margaret Trail system will be closed during operations. Please follow all signage. Smoke may also impact those using the Dowdy Lake Campgrounds and Day-Use Area. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. More information about smoke impacts is available at https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health.

2022-2023 Slash Pile Burning Planned for Glacier View Meadows/ RF Highlands

The Glacier View Fire Protection District in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control will be burning three community slash pile sites in the Glacier View Meadows subdivision during early spring 2022. Burning operations will occur as weather and snow conditions permit. Due to the size and number of piles, we expect burning operations to last several days.

Site #1: 12th Filing – Little Bald Mountain

Site #2: Red Feather Highlands

Burning will only be conducted under specific guidelines established by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, including having adequate snow cover on the ground and acceptable weather forecasts that meet guidelines for safe and effective burning and adequate smoke dispersal.

The main objective of burning the slash pile sites is to reduce remaining woody fuels for the purpose of public safety. The existing community slash piles are a result of Glacier View Meadows HOA free community slash disposal program aimed to assist landowners reduce hazardous fuels in the wildland urban interface.

Glacier View Fire Protection District works closely with partner agencies such as the Colorado Air  Pollution Control Division, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, Larimer County Sheriff’s         Department, and the Larimer County Department of Public Health in developing and implementing any   pile burning project. 8/29/22 - Larimer County Fire Restrictions - LIFTED

Per Chief Knox - GVFPD

Larimer County Fire Restriction expired 8/29/2022

Please continue to be fire safe and keep your campfires supervised at all times. Thank you!

LARIMER COUNTY EXTENDS FIRE RESTRICTIONS

On recommendation by the Larimer County Sheriff, the Board of Larimer County Commissioners at their regular Administrative Matters meeting today voted 2-0 to extend the fire restrictions currently in effect in unincorporated Larimer County.

The restrictions have been extended since the danger of wildfire, forest, and grass fires are high due to above-normal temperatures, lightning strikes, and windy, dry conditions.

As of 12:01 p.m. July 29, 2022 restrictions on open fires for the unincorporated portions of Larimer County are extended and stay in effect until 12:01 p.m. Aug. 29, 2022. Also in effect are restrictions on the use of fireworks, combustible devices, public firework displays, and incendiary devices. This is not a fire ban.

Restricted today:

·  Open fires, including camp or cooking fires

·  Smoking in the open is not allowed, including on trails, parks, and open spaces.

·  Fireworks or firework displays.

·  Incendiary devices including sky lanterns, exploding ammunition, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition.

·  Welding

Not Restricted:

·  Contained open fires in permanently constructed stationary masonry or metal fireplaces specifically designed for the purpose of combustion.

·  Gas or Liquid Fueled Fires fueled by bottled gas or pressurized liquid shall include but are not limited to portable heaters, cooking stoves, heating stoves, hiking/camping stoves, grills, fire pits, fireplaces, etc.

·  The use of an internal or external combustion engine with a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order and meeting published standards.

·  Fireplaces or wood stoves located inside permanent structures.

·  Fires in commercially operated wood and/or charcoal-fired grills designed for cooking.

·  Charcoal-fired grills when used at a private residence and location on a non-combustible surface of at least ten feet in diameter.

·  Welding and other torch work within an enclosed building.

·  Outdoor welding and other torch work provided that:

·         The area where the welding or other torch work is to be performed is free of vegetation for at least thirty feet in all directions.

·         Wind speed is less than 10 mph.

·         There is sufficient fire suppressant immediately available to suppress any fire that may be started.

·  Fires in air curtain burners.

·  Public firework display approved by the appropriate Fire Department or Fire District.

The Sheriff may give limited exemptions from these restrictions based on his pre-approval and inspection.

Any person who knowingly violates the restrictions can be fined. The Ordinance for the Regulation of Open Burning in Unincorporated Larimer County can be found by clicking here: https://www.larimer.gov/sites/default/files/ordinance_concerning_the_restriction_of_open_fires_-_2022_final_04262022.pdf

FIRE RESTRICTIONS SET FOR LARIMER COUNTY

The County Board of Commissioners has voted to instate fire restrictions starting tomorrow, which will be in effect until noon July 29th unless extended or ended early. The restrictions forbid uncontained open fires, the use of combustible devices, and fireworks (which, to be clear, are always illegal for private citizens to use in our area). I don't know yet whether the public fireworks in Red Feather will still be held as planned but expect a decision will be announced soon. Note: if the fireworks do proceed, a number of fire departments attend every year with brush trucks and water tenders to patrol the fall zone and make sure the display is as safe as possible.

Per the resolution, this means:

The following are not permitted:

·  Open fires, including camp or cooking fires.

·  Fireworks or firework displays.

·  Incendiary devices including sky lanterns, exploding ammunition, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition.

·  Welding or operating or operating acetylene or other torches with open flames.

The following are still allowed:

·  Contained open fires in permanently constructed stationary masonry or metal fireplaces specifically designed for the purpose of combustion.

·  Fireplaces or wood stoves located inside permanent structures.

·  Fires in commercially operated wood and/or charcoal fired grills designed for cooking.

·  Fires such as those in camp stoves and grills using gas or pressurized liquid.

·  Welding and other torch work within an enclosed building.

The full text of the resolution is available here: 06-28-22 Larimer County Fire Restrictions Resolution

Thanks and be safe!

6/17  UPDATE - Larimer County Fire Restrictions

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (June 16, 2022) – Due to the forecast of continuing dry, warm conditions and other environmental factors, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests’ Clear Creek, Boulder and Canyon Lakes ranger districts have enacted Stage 1 fire restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m., June 16. Stage 1 fire restrictions limit where and what type of fires visitors can have and are in effect until July 15, 2022.

The following is PROHIBITED under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:

·  Igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire (including fires fueled by charcoal or briquettes) outside of a permanent metal or concrete fire pit or grate that the Forest Service has installed and maintained at its developed recreation sites (campgrounds and picnic areas).

·  Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

·  Operating a chainsaw without an effective and properly installed spark arrestor, a fire extinguisher kept with the operator, and a shovel.

·  Blasting, welding, or operating a torch with an open flame without being in a cleared area of at least 10 feet in diameter and having a fire extinguisher kept with the operator.

·  Fireworks are always prohibited on National Forest System lands.

Violation of Stage 1 fire restrictions could result in a maximum fine of $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for more than six months, or both. If responsible for causing a wildfire, one could be held accountable for suppression costs of that fire.

The Forests and communities are still recovering from the wildfires of 2020 and if the predictions are correct we could face another challenging summer. Do your part to reduce human-caused wildfires and follow all fire restrictions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter for the safety of each of your communities and the GVFPD as a whole.

2022 Slash Pile Burning Planned for Glacier View Meadows:

The Glacier View Fire Protection District in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control will be burning three community slash pile sites in the Glacier View Meadows subdivision during early spring 2022. Burning operations will occur as weather and snow conditions permit. Due to the size and number of piles, we expect burning operations to last several days.

Site #1: Mt. Parnassus at Green Mountain Drive

Site #2: Straw Ct at Haystack Dive

Site #3: Mt Moriah Rd

Smoke may affect your health.
